AJ Styles is first professional to become the TNA Triple Crown for the five times and the TNA Grand Slam for two times. The first TNA contracted wrestler to be ranked number one on the annual Pro Wrestling Illustrated PWI 500 list. He was Wrestler of the Year for 2016 voted by both PWI and Wrestling Observer Newsletter (WON). Styles was the first wrestler to win the WWE title outside of North America. At Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, AJ Styles was born. When he grew up his family was in poverty where his father was an abusive and alcoholic. Styles was unable to watch professional wrestling because his family’s poverty was such that they couldn’t afford television. He studied in Johnson High School at Gainesville, Georgia. In 1996, he completed his graduation. His friends were doing professional wrestling therefore he too joined a professional wrestling school. For this he left Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. He also worked by mowing lawns and driving an ambulance for income.

On 2000, Styles got married to Wendy who was a school teacher. They had 3 sons and one daughter. He has a large tattoo on right side of his torso in which he wrote his wrestling ring name AJ and the birth date of all his children. He is a Christian and he also stated that in his life “It’s God first and family second.”

Career in Professional Wrestling

On 1998 at Georgia based National Championship Wrestling (NCW), Styles made his debut as Mr. Olympia, a masked wrestler. He was trained by Rick Michaels. Styles didn’t receive a contract in WWF (World Wrestling Federation) after his first WWF tryout match against Rick Michaels, who was his trainer on 9th July 2001. He won the match with a Shooting Star Press. He then tried in many other Professional Wrestling tournaments but was unsuccessful in many.

Styles again appeared in WWF on 21st January 2002 but lost to The Hurricane. A developmental contract by WWE at Cincinnati, Ohio was offered to him. His wife was unable to relocate due to her college plans so, he declined it. Then he made his debut at Ring of Honor (ROH) and performed a main event but again he lost the match. On one night tournament at the Second Anniversary Show, he defeated CM Punk, Jimmy Rave and Matt Stryker to become the first ROH Pure Wrestling Champion.

Career in Total Non-stop Action (TNA) Wrestling

On May 2002, AJ Styles joined TNA and signed a non-exclusive contract. Within a week he became inaugural TNA X Division Champion by defeating Low Ki and Jerry Lynn. He also won the NWA World Tag Team Championship teaming with Lynn and by defeating Bruce and Lenny Lane. After Lynn turned on him due to which he lost both the title. On 11th June 2003, Styles became the NWA World Heavyweight Champion by defeating Jarrett and Raven. This made him TNA Triple Crown winner for the first time. Then he lost his title against Killings due to interference of Jarrett.

On 9th June 2004, he became the three times X Division Champion by defeating Frankie Kazarian after returning to X Division. Then he successfully defended the title in many matches. On 7th November 2004 he lost his title to Petey Williams. He then again won the title for the fourth and fifth time. Then he lost the title to Daniels due to his long feud with Samoa Joe. He had great career in TNA in which he teamed up with Samoa Joe who was his old enemy and then he joined Kurt Angle.

On 22nd January 2009, Styles got injured in a match with Kurt Angle. He made his return by defeating Booker-T and becoming the Legends Champion. This made him the first TNA Grand Slam Champion. He then won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship against Matt Morgan, Sting, Hernandez and Kurt Angle in a five-way match. He successfully retained the title by defeating Sting’s undefeated streak at Bound for Glory. Styles then defended his title in various occasions with the help of Ric Flair. He lost the title to Rob Van Dam ending his reign of 211 days. He ended his twelve year association with TNA saying by him that they made him an offer by reducing his salary to 60%.

Career in WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)

On 24th January 2016 at Royal Rumble, Styles made his re-debut and eliminated Curtis Axel and Tyler Breeze and then he got eliminated by Kevin Owens in 29 minutes. Then he had long feud with Chris Jericho in which he lost to Jericho at WrestleMania 32 on 3rd April 2016.  Then he teamed up with his old Bullet Club members Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson naming the team The Club. They attacked Roman Reigns in a championship match with Styles. Then they attacked John Cena after which Styles defeated Cena. On 19th July 2016 Styles drafted to SmackDown and his team member drafted to Raw which ended up by splitting The Club.

On 11th September 2016 at Backlash, Styles defeated Dean Ambrose and became the new WWE World Champion for the first time. It was his eight world title overall. He successfully defended his title in many occasion. At Royal Rumble, on 29th January 2017, he lost his title against John Cena ending his 140 days reign. On 23rd July At Madison Square Garden, he defeated Kevin Owens and become the United States Champion. He lost his title in a triple thread match against Baron Corbin and Tye Dillinger at hell in a Cell on 8th October 2017.

On 7th November 2017 At Manchester, England, Styles become the 2 time WWE Champion by defeating Jinder Mahal. The first wrestler to win the WWE title outside of North America was Styles. On 19th November 2017 at Survivor Series, he lost a match against Brock Lesnar in a Champion VS Champion match. He defended his title against Jinder Mahar, Shinsuke Nakamura, Sami Zayn, Samoa Joe and many other opponents and became the longest reigning WWE Champion under the SmackDown brand. He has long feud with Samoa Joe which ended by defeating him in all the Pay-Per-views. On 13th November 2018 at SmackDown, Styles ended his longest reign of 371 days against Daniel Bryan in a losing effort. He is eighth longest reigning WWE Champion equaling with Macho Man Randy Savage.

On 27th January 2019 at Royal Rumble, Styles again lost against Daniel Bryan due to interference of Eric Rowan in WWE Championship match. He defeated Randy Orton at WrestleMania 35 on 7th April 2019. Styles got a hip injury due to which he was out for treatment. On 15th he got drafted to Raw brand. On 19th May at Money in the bank, AJ Styles lost his match for WWE Universal Championship against Seth Rollins.

Styles returned to Raw on 24th June 2019, defeating Ricochet. He teamed up with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson resulting the re-union of The club, which turned the heel. On 14th July 2019 at Extreme Rules, AJ Styles defeated Ricochet and become the United States Champion for the third time.
